it is the end of one of the most difficult years in the 25-year-history of our theatre. After twenty months of struggling for survival, during which we were exposed to charges of unlawful business practices, political threats, lies, false accusations and lynching by the media, we are pleased to inform you that we have survived, and have been exonerated. We still haven’t consolidated our finances, because we are still owed some money from last year, but we have survived owing to the large number of performances (458) we staged in 2013.
During moments of the strongest pressure, in the spring of 2013, when it seemed that we would have to close Mala Scena Theatre, we appealed for help and support to all our theater’s friends from all over the world. The letters of support arrived in huge numbers and in those extremely difficult days they were the crucial voice of support that helped our theatre survive. Our audience, which has faithfully supported Mala Scena throughout the 25 years of its existence, awarded us with a recognition which made us proud, proclaiming Mala Scena the Best Independent Theatre in Croatia in 2013, in the Teatar.hr portal’s selection.
At the end of the year and in the spirit of Christmas, we wish to thank all of you who raised your voices in defense of Mala Scena and against the unreasonable political pressures which wanted to silence Vitomira Lončar and close the theatre. Your support was decisive in our struggle and we shall remain grateful for it until the end of both our personal and professional life in Mala Scena Theater.
We are convinced that we shall stay in touch and that you will follow our work, continuing to support our aspirations to share, through theatre, various current topics of the growing-up-process with children of all ages, and to help them in their aesthetic education and growth through art.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Vitomira Lončar and Ivica Šimić
